Reduced impact and a record completion time for the construction of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University's Science and Technology centre in Morocco

The Science & Technology Centre at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Ben Guerir, Morocco, will be located 70 km west of Marrakech. Bymaro, the Moroccan subsidiary of Bouygues Bâtiment International, has been awarded the all-trades contract to build the centre. It faces the challenge of meeting a demanding deadline while at the same time ensuring reduced carbon impact.

This project is exceptional because of its scale – 95,400 m² of two-storey buildings on a vast site requiring the use of nine cranes – and a construction timetable of barely ten months.  

To meet these exceptionally tight deadlines, a network of partner companies (contractors and suppliers) has been created on the basis of their reliability, their technical expertise and their ability to meet challenging schedules.

A number of lean management measures have been put in place in parallel:
  • a room dedicated to the Last Planner System has been installed in each building,
  • a collaborative planning and logistics management platform has been extended to all partners and subcontractors,
  • the sequencing of tasks has been reworked to reduce co-activity and optimise the occupation of space.

In addition, the project is aiming for LEED environmental certification. To measure and minimise the carbon impact of the project by taking into account the building’s life cycle, Bymaro is using One Click LCA, innovative software that calculates and reduces the environmental impact of the construction site.

The site already involves more than 1,500 people, more than half of whom have been recruited in the region of Ben Guerir. Bymaro has worked to encourage their integration and is upskilling them by providing approximately 4,200 hours of training across all trades.

By the start of the 2022-23 academic year, the campus, which also includes a Humanities, Economics and Social Sciences centre and a Business centre, will provide administrative areas, conference rooms, specialised teaching laboratories (geology, chemistry, nano-engineering, etc.), offices and facilities dedicated to research. It aims to accommodate 6,000 students and 400 teaching and research staff within a few years. This new science and technology centre will establish the university as a hub of excellence in research, innovation and training for Morocco and, more broadly, for the whole of Africa.
