Bouygues Construction wins contract to extend a metro line in Hong Kong.

26-09-2023

Two of Bouygues Construction’s subsidiaries, Dragages Hong Kong and Bouygues Travaux Publics, recently won a contract to extend the Tung Chung line of the Hong Kong Metro. The contract, which is worth HKD3.9 billion (€468 million), covers the extension of the line to the west of Lantau Island, a fast-developing area. This is an opportunity for Bouygues Construction to reaffirm its commitment to low-carbon mobility.

A high-profile public transport project for a fast-growing region

The contract, carried out on behalf of MTR Corporation Ltd, operator of the Hong Kong metro, covers the construction of a 1.3 km tunnel and the creation of a new station, Tung Chung West, which will become the new terminus of the line. This westward extension will provide service to a fast-growing district with a constantly rising population, improving mobility for users by linking Hong Kong’s various districts and strengthening connectivity with the outside world in this strategic region.

In addition to the construction of the tunnel, which presents a considerable technical challenge in view of the configuration of the site, the population density and the constraints associated with an urban environment, the construction of the new metro station will have to respect both the nearby living environment and the natural environment. “The entrances to the new station will provide natural light, and eco-responsible elements will be incorporated into the design of the surface facilities” explains Patrick IU, Managing Director of Dragages Hong Kong.

MTR Corporation Ltd renews its trust

This project, which illustrates Bouygues Construction’s expertise in low-carbon mobility, also demonstrates the confidence that the long-standing operator of the Hong Kong metro has in the company. The extension of the Tung Chung line is the fourth project carried out by Bouygues Construction teams for MTR Corporation Ltd, following the “Sha Tin to Central Link”, “Shek Yam to Mei Lai Road” and “Mei Lai Road to Hoi Ting Road” extensions.

“We are delighted that the customer has placed its trust in us once again,” remarks Patrick IU, who intends to continue developing the company’s business in this part of the world. “Several projects are underway in Hong Kong, including the Sport Center and Public Vehicle Park, a fire station topped by a modular residential complex, and the Central Kowloon Route and T2 Trunk Road tunnels. We look forward to contributing to the economic development and attractiveness of the various districts of Hong Kong.”
