Mégalis Bretagne, the Brittany region fibre network authority, has awarded the contract for the design and roll-out of fibre optic in the Brittany region to a consortium of Axione and Bouygues Energies & Services in phases 2 and 3 of the Bretagne Très Haut Débit project for superfast broadband. 1,100,000 homes, businesses and public amenities in Brittany are concerned, making this the biggest public initiative project for the roll-out of FTTH (fibre to the home) ever carried out in France.

Mégalis Bretagne has now confirmed its intention, first announced several months ago, to speed up the construction of the public fibre optic network in Brittany. A consortium consisting of Axione (lead company) and Bouygues Energies & Services has undertaken to supply all the fibre optic connections for phases 2 and 3 of the du Bretagne Très Haut Débit project by 2026. The annual rate of roll-out will be 100,000 installations built in 2020, rising to 150,000 as of 2021. A detailed schedule of regions to be connected year by year has now been drawn up, and it will be published in the near future.

The investment made by local authorities in Brittany combining under the banner of Mégalis Bretagne will also benefit the regional economy. In the region, businesses in the broadband sector will play a large part in the project. More than 1,000 local jobs will be involved, helping to energise the regional economic and social fabric. The consortium has made firm commitments with respect to professional integration.

Loïg Chesnais-Girard, President of the Regional Council of Brittany, said:  “By setting ourselves the challenge of 100% fibre coverage by 2026, Brittany has opted to ensure balanced development throughout the region, resolutely focused on the future. The contract we have signed today with Axione and Bouygues Energies & Services will bring benefit to all the people of Brittany in the shortest time possible.”

The scope of phases 2 and 3 of the project was ratified by a decision of Mégalis Breagne on March 16, 2018, following votes previously taken by all of Brittany’s inter-communal bodies.
